FORUM - TIPS for STUDENTS.
(goes into effect 01/08/2008)
The purpose of Forum is basically to expand
your horizons while you are at BCC and to promote
engagement by you with the wider world of culture, art
and politics.
We want you to seek out events or programs that educate
you to participate in the society around you. Think about whether
this is an educational event (but not academic
or course-required). Remember that for credit it has to be at least
one hour in length.
Whatever addresses a public, national or
social issue qualifies for Forum credit, no matter what
the cultural, artistic, academic, or community venue may be.
All arts events
by definition are public events and qualify for Forum credit. See
the list of pre-approved area institutions on this site. Any BCC
sponsored artistic event on campus (theatrical
performance, musical concert, etc.) qualifies for Forum credit.
Cultural events
are especially acceptable if their theme or content has to do with
public issues. Angels in America is about AIDS,
West Side Story is about race relations, etc.
Civic events
like town meetings, meetings of the town zoning board, public hearings
on community issues, speeches or debates by candidates for elected
office, lectures about local history, and discussions about environmental
issues are credit worthy.
Credit is given for attending a lecture
or taking a tour (audio or in person) at a museum
or historical site or natural location (state parks, Audubon Society,
etc). Just meandering through a place on a general admission will
not count.
Disallowed:
Vocational or professional development events.
Sports and recreational events.
Entertainments, fairs, or theme parks.
Art galleries.
Charitable activities and service learning.
Jury duty.
Course requirements
Convocation or Pinning Ceremonies
Bring proof of attendance
to the Registrar’s Office within 90 days: an admission stub,
a program signed by the speaker, a brochure signed by tour leader,
or an agenda or minutes from a civic meeting.
Check the Berkshire Eagle “Community Notices”
as a good source of credit worthy events.
South County students: any
event at the Mason Library, Berkshire South Community Center (15
Crissey Road Great Barrington), or the DuBois Center for American
History (684 So. Main, Great Barrington, next to Shell gas station)
are credit worthy.
Read the catalogue requirements for graduation
under “Forum.”
Go early, go often. Keep going.
